If you loved the old game enough that you'd still pull it out and play it, you'll love this one. If you didn't like a previous version, you won't like this one. It is pretty much the same game with these differences:
1. There is a "city" you can take the bus to. They moved a few old places that used to show up in your town on occasion to the city full time (the fortune teller, Katrina, and the tent vendor, Redd). The Happy Housing Authority (who mostly just sends you mail) has a presence in the city. They also added a salon to change your look, a theater for entertainment, a shoe shiner (change your shoe color), and a higher end store. You can meet other characters in the city who don't live in your town, but there doesn't appear to be a way to "remember" them to mail them, etc, unless they live in your city. I haven't yet had one I met in the city move to my town so that you can see if that changes their opinion of you.
2. You can play over the wifi and visit other people's towns, or have them visit yours. Mostly this is good for fruit exchange- if your town only has oranges, open your gate and leave some extras by it- guests will usually bring you whatever fruit you have. Just make sure that you bought everything you wanted from Nook's that day and already cleaned out the recycling and lost and found. In other words, anything you wanted to own or make money from is done before you open your gate. Anyone coming to your town has access to all that too, can pick your trees/mushrooms, etc. The system allows up to 4 guests at a time, and you must both have each other's friend codes to make access possible. Plus, one of you needs to open your town and the other needs to request to travel. Wii has made a microphone as an optional purchase with this game for use during these "visits" but be aware it's an "auto-on" mic that broadcasts everything from your living room!
3. There is the ability to send letters and presents to other player characters using wifi.
4. You can still have 4 characters, and each gets their own house, but they cannot play at the same time. Each also gets their own friend code.
The wii controls do actually seem to work well for this game if you run with the nunchuk and do actions with the main controller. Keep in mind this is from a person who normally doesn't play the Wii because I really don't like the controllers (can be hard for those with arthritis and joint issues).
I'll add more as I come across it. I'm also anxious to see how it compares to a game with a similar theme and fan base that has been updated for the Wii, Harvest Moon. Of course that's a gift for the daughter for Christmas so it will be a while before I can try that one out!
